At the last federal election communities rose up and reshaped the Australian political landscape.
The federal parliament was transformed with seven new community independents, all elected on a platform of greater ambition on climate, integrity and gender equality.
A year ago in July, they first sat in the federal parliament, and they got to work.
Now, it’s time to reflect on and celebrate what has been achieved.
Julia Zemiro will moderate a panel with Zoe Daniel, Monique Ryan and Sophie Scamps
Curtin MP Kate Chaney will deliver a keynote presentation on the future of the community independents movement
Climate 200’s Executive Director, Byron Fay, and Convenor Simon Holmes à Court will update the community on what’s next for the organisation
A Year of Impact will be MCed by media personality Julia Zemiro
Thanks, in part, to the relentless pressure of the independent MPs, echoing the calls from the community for greater action on climate change and political integrity, we have seen a year of momentous change.
Less than two months after first sitting in Parliament, the independents on the crossbench helped pass the Climate Change Bill, which increased our national target for cutting emissions to at least 43% by 2030, and locked Australia’s net zero by 2050 goal into law.
Two months after that, the Parliament passed legislation to establish a National Anti-Corruption Commission, inspired by the bill put forward by Independent MP Cathy McGowan in 2018, and continued by her successor Dr Helen Haines MP.
A few months later, independents helped strengthen the Safeguard Mechanism, a policy compelling the country’s 215 biggest emitters to cut their pollution by 5% a year, and all new gas export projects to offset all of their emissions. The Guardian described it as the “country’s most significant emissions reduction legislation in more than a decade”.
These are only some of the nation-building reforms the community independents have helped bring to the front and centre of the Parliamentary agenda.
